Saturday Is Disaster Preparedness Day In San Mateo County

This weekend's event in San Mateo promises important lessons, fun for all ages, live demonstrations, free hot dogs, and other giveaways.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Event Center will host the 20th Disaster Preparedness Day on Saturday, inviting families to spend part of their weekend learning how to respond during an emergency via classes, workshops, live demonstrations and fun activities.

According to the county, the event is designed to avoid "scare tactics" in favor of developing real-world disaster skills, like learning how to prepare meals with no power and communicate with loved ones if cell service goes down.

Firefighters will demonstrate how to properly use extinguishers and medics will provide instruction for hands-only CPR. Multiple classes and workshops are planned throughout the afternoon, with many available in English, Spanish and Mandarin.

Kids will get to sit down for "Storytime with a Firefighter," and the Red Cross will host "Prepare with Pedro," to help young learners safely take action during a house fire or other emergency.

Organizers will provide free hot dogs, and attendees will have a chance to win free emergency radios and emergency meal packs. Admission, parking and food are free, but officials encourage residents to reserve a spot ahead of time for the classes they are interested in attending.
