SEQUOIA HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DONATES $5,627 TO SEQUOIA HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS

The Sequoia High School Alumni Association announced it has awarded $5,312 to teachers at Sequoia High School under its annual “Cherokee Grants” program as well as $150 to the Cheer Team and $165 to the baseball program. The “Cherokee Grants” program was established to fund the purchase of instructional equipment, materials or services that are not included in the current Sequoia Union High School District budget. Grant applications are given to every Sequoia High School teacher. The  “Cherokee Grants” Committee studies each request and makes a decision as to how monies can best be spent to benefit the most students or the most worthy programs. Several thousand dollars have been awarded since the program was instituted in 1987.

This year, 20 teachers have been awarded grants to fully fund or help contribute to items and programs including resources that address social and emotional skills for Special Education; a bicycle tour of Paris as well as a DVD player for the French class; an iPad mini for Algebra; Chromebooks for Special Education; funding for Debate Team coaches; a tablet with a keyboard for Independent Living Skills; funding for SAT preparation for the Advanced via Individual Determination classes; Sony bloggies for the Health Careers Academy; heavy duty 3-hole punches for Mathematics; a license for Smartboard math tools software for Mathematics; a class set of scientific calculators for Science-Physics; boom boxes and auxiliary cables for Dance; cameras for Digital Photography; aprons for Visual Art; a Google Nexus 7 tablet for English/Reading; an Articulation Competence kit for Special Education; and a microphone for Spanish International Baccalaureate.

Members of the public who wish to donate to this worthwhile program can do so by making a check payable to the Sequoia High School Alumni Association, P. O. Box 2534, Redwood City, CA 94064, stipulating that the funds are to be used for the “Cherokee Grants” program or via Pay pal on the Association’s website, www.sequoiahsalumniassoc.org.
