REDWOOD CITY, CA — The Board of Supervisors has unanimously approved a key piece of funding to move forward with San Mateo County's largest-ever affordable housing project.

The $14 million loan greenlit Tuesday will support the second phase of Midway Villiage, a growing development near the Cow Palace in Daly City's Bayshore neighborhood. The project is redeveloping the original site that opened with 150 affordable housing units in the 1970s.

The first phase of the revamp was completed in May, featuring 147 units and a parking garage. The second phase will add another 111 homes, from studio to four-bedroom apartments, and three more phases will follow.

"This is probably, in terms of housing in San Mateo County, one of the most transformative projects ever," said David Canepa, the District 5 supervisor. "You're looking at going to 555 units. This is amazing."

The third and fourth phases of the project will add more affordable apartments and ownership opportunities, and the fifth phase will create a large park with play fields. On-site amenities include childcare services, community gardens, an exercise room, and outdoor recreation areas.
