SMC Deploys Labor Day Patrols For The Holiday Weekend

Extra deputies will be on patrol throughout the weekend to look for impaired drivers across San Mateo County.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — As Labor Day festivities get underway across the Bay Area, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is asking revelers to plan ahead and avoid getting behind the wheel under the influence over the long holiday weekend.

Research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found nearly 500 deadly crashes happened nationwide over Labor Day in 2022. Nearly 40 percent were linked to impaired driving, and a quarter involved drivers with a BAC almost twice the legal limit, the NHTSA found.

Supported by the state Office of Traffic Safety, the sheriff's office will place extra deputies on patrol throughout the holiday weekend to watch out for drivers who are impaired or recklessly driving.

Here are a few reminders from the sheriff's office to help keep the community safe:

• Plan Ahead: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated driver, use a ride-sharing
service, taxi or public transportation.
• Buckle Up: Wearing a seatbelt is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself in the event of a
collision.
• Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. Keep your focus solely on
the road.
• Follow Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the severity of
collisions.
• Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists: With more people enjoying outdoor activities, be extra
vigilant and share the road responsibly.
• Take Breaks: If you’re traveling long distances, take regular breaks to rest and avoid fatigue.
