SMC Supes Direct $18.5M To Affordable Housing Efforts
The latest funds will support affordable housing developments across the region, including new apartments under construction in Belmont.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — San Mateo County supervisors on Tuesday approved $18.5 million in federal funds to be used for affordable housing.
The Board of Supervisors noted that the cost of living is so high in San Mateo County that the federal government considers a family of four earning $156,650 to be in the "low income" bracket.
"Housing continues to be a pressing need across San Mateo County, especially as inflation continues to eat into paychecks," said David Canepa, the board's vice president. "I can think of no higher priority than directing additional funding to affordable housing."

The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, and officials said $9.5 million will help cover the construction of the Belmont Family Apartments, which broke ground in April. Once complete, the complex will offer 125 affordable apartments on El Camino Real, within walking distance of the Belmont CalTrain station, including 20 units designated for formerly homeless veterans.
The Board of Supervisors directed the County Executive's Office to explore other areas of priority for further projects.
