San Mateo County Teen Hit By Car While Crossing Street: Police

The collision happened May 5 and the teen remains hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 17-year-old girl remains in critical condition after a car struck her in a crosswalk May 5 in Redwood City, police said.

At around noon on May 5, The Redwood City Police Department responded to a traffic accident involving a car driven by a 64-year-old and a pedestrian, who was identified as a 17-year-old girl, on El Camino Real, police said.

She was transported to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition, police said.

Police said they spoke to witnesses and reviewed video evidence and their initial assessment is the driver ran a red light and struck the girl, who was lawfully in the crosswalk.

Police said that the driver did not seem to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Paramedics believed the driver had a debilitating medical event immediately after the crash, police said.

A graphic video was released on social media that shows a portion of the violent event, which police confirmed.

RCPD have not released the identity of the driver at this time.
