Two Highway 101 Closures Planned To Replace Redwood City Bridge
The first of two major highway closures is scheduled for the weekend as crews begin to install a new Cordilleras Creek Bridge.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Two upcoming closures along a one-mile span of Highway 101 will impact trips in both directions in the coming weeks, starting with a full southbound closure scheduled to begin Friday night.
According to Caltrans, the Cordilleras Creek Bridge has reached the end of its lifespan, and crews will use a pair of 55-hour closures to replace the existing triple-box culvert with a single-span bridge. The existing culvert was built in 1930, and the new bridge is designed to allow for better water flow and fish passage.
Due to a limited construction window, Caltrans will use an "Accelerated Bridge Construction" process and utilize a "cut and cover" method designed to limit impacts for commuters and complete the bridge much faster. The approach will require the northbound and southbound lanes to close on two different weekends, detouring drivers onto surface roads.

"This approach allows Caltrans to construct the bridge in one summer season instead of the usual three years, reducing effects on traffic, increasing safety of travelers and construction workers, and minimizing environmental impacts," Caltrans officials wrote Sunday. "Traffic management strategies will be implemented to keep traffic away from the area and to reroute travelers between the Holly Street and Whipple Avenue exits onto Industrial Way in Redwood City."
