Oakland To Begin Implementing Universal Preschool Following Court Victory
Measure AA also supports college access for Oakland Unified School District students through scholarships, coaching and mentoring.

Following a three-year court challenge, access to universal preschool in Oakland is becoming a reality, city and community leaders said Wednesday.

For three years, Oakland defended Measure AA, a parcel tax on the ballot in 2018. Following a victory in the court case, which focused on whether the citizen initiative needed majority or two-thirds approval, city officials announced they are ready to implement the measure, which will deliver preschool to all 3- and 4-year-olds in the city within a decade.
Measure AA also supports college access for Oakland Unified School District students through scholarships, coaching, and among other things, mentoring.
