Oakland DMV Office Back Online After Days-Long Outage

California Department of Motor Vehicles officials said Thursday that a computer outage that has affected its offices across the state is again affecting Bay Area offices. As of 11 a.m., offices in Concord, Mountain View and San Jose are affected. DMV officials had previously said that all Bay Area offices were providing full services as of 9 a.m. Thursday.

But spokesman Jaime Garza said, "As our staff attempts to get computers back online, there are instances when the computers may have a hiccup and we need to make a quick adjustment."

The outage started Monday and affected at least six Bay Area offices.

"The DMV made significant progress overnight in getting offices impacted by the computer hardware failure back online," DMV officials said Thursday. "The DMV has 188 total facilities, including field offices, which serve the public. As of 10:30 a.m. [Thursday], 173 offices are operational and providing services to the public."

DMV officials said the outage is affecting driver's license, ID card and vehicle registration transactions at DMV field offices.

In the East Bay, the DMV has field offices in Pleasanton, El Cerrito, Hayward and Oakland.

To avoid vehicle registration penalties because a transaction could not be processed, customers should fill out a statement of facts or write a letter explaining why the payment was late, according to DMV officials.

The state is updating a list here of all offices affected by the outage.
