SANTA ROSA, CA — A bald French bulldog named Petunia recently took the top prize in the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Sonoma County Fair.

“We know she isn’t ugly, she’s beautiful in her own unique way,” wrote Luvable Dog Rescue, which is currently caring for Petunia, in an Instagram post celebrating her big win.

The competition in Santa Rosa is “a testament that the pedigree does not define the pet” and “celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique,” according to the fair website. The contest, established nearly 50 years ago, with the 2025 competition held Friday night, also highlights the importance of advocating for all animals and the benefits of pet adoption.

Petunia has a loving nature and was rescued from a breeder selling French bulldogs that were bred to be hairless, according to her rescue in Eugene, Oregon.

The Las Vegas breeder was hoarding over 50 dogs in crates, Today reported, adding that Petunia underwent surgery earlier this year to improve her breathing.

As the top dog, 2-year-old Petunia won $5,000 and will be featured on limited-edition cans of Mug Root Beer, which is the contest’s sponsor, according to Today.
