ROHNERT PARK, CA — Although smoke permeated the air Wednesday in Rohnert Park, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety assured residents there were no local fires burning.

"We’re getting lots of questions about the smell of smoke in the air," the Rohnert Park DPS said in a Nixle alert issued at noon Wednesday. "There are no active fires in Sonoma County. The smoke is drifting down with the wind from the fires near the Oregon border. Stay alert, stay informed and stay safe."

The Bay Area is under an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through Thursday.

In Rohnert Park and Cotati, the air quality reading Wednesday reached 161 in some areas which is in the "unhealthy" range. An AQI in the 150s and low 160s means residents should keep their outdoor activities light and short, and go indoors if they have symptoms. Sensitive groups, which are people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, pregnant women and people who spend a lot of time outdoors; should consider moving all activities indoors.

The interior North Bay mountains, including parts of eastern Sonoma County and especially far eastern Napa County, remained under a red flag warning. Wind gusts could reach 35-40 mph in the higher terrain. Combined with low humidity of 13-20 percent, it will create conditions conducive for rapid fire spread, forecasters said.
