Barber Convicted of First Degree Murder, Faces Life Without Parole
47-year-old man who is a former employee of the Cordova Recreation and Park District convicted of first degree murder for killing his former supervisor.
District Attorney Jan Scully announced today that 49-year-old Dupree Pierre Barber was convicted by jury for the first degree murder of Steve Ebert, who was a maintenance supervisor for the Cordova Recreation and Park District.
The jury also found true the special circumstance allegation that Barber was lying in wait.
According to the District Attorney, Barber shot and killed Mr. Ebert out of anger from being laid off from his job as an employee of the park district.
On January 23, 2012, he approached his former boss as he was pulling into his work site at Hagan Community Park in Rancho Cordova around 6:00 a.m. and shot him six times with a handgun. Barber’s damaged car was recovered close to the park, which contained the murder weapon.
Barber faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is set for August 28, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in Department 19 before the Honorable Patrick Marlette.
