Unfounded Rumor Caused Search for Gun at Rosemont High; Nothing Found

Police and administrators investigated a rumor at the high school Friday.

Rosemont High School administrators on Friday searched for a gun some thought might be on campus, but found nothing.

They say the alleged weapon turned out to be nothing more than a rumor started by students.

Principal Leise Martinez said the district's school resource officers helped to investigate the incident.

"It was a rumor and whenever there is any kind of rumor like that, we're going to do as much as we possibly can to look into it," Martinez said by phone. "No stone unturned."

Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman Gabe Ross said the law enforcement officials who work with the district "didn't even think it was credible enough to call a lockdown."

"They're trained to know the difference between a credible report and kids being kids," Ross said.

Martinez said officials "definitely had to deal with individuals involved," but declined to specify what kind of disciplinary actions students might face. She advised parents to stay involved in their kids' lives to prevent incidents like this in the future.

"Parents need to know who their students are hanging around with, who their students' friends are," she said.
