Crime Watch: K9 Helps Nab Suspect, 6 Catalytic Converter Thefts in 1 Night

K9 Helps Nab Suspected Drunk Driver 

Shortly before 3 a.m. on Jan. 8, a suspected drunk driver drove out of the Old Town area, ignoring an officer's order to stop.  Officers followed and tried to stop him, and he sped away, evading officers for several minutes. The suspect left his vehicle on South Cirby Way near Hidden Hills Drive and fled on foot, jumping over a backyard fence, before being taken into custody with the help of one of our K9s.  The suspect, a 21-year-old male from Citrus Heights, was arrested on suspicion of DUI, felony evading, and other related charges.

Car Thief Suspect Arrested

Last week, Roseville Police reported that on Dec. 28, officers recovered a stolen vehicle (originally stolen from Citrus Heights) in the Theiles Manor neighborhood, and that the driver fled.  Officers knew the suspect and continued their efforts to find him.  On the afternoon of Jan. 8, officers conducted a probation search at a home in east Roseville, and arrested the 27-year-old male suspect on several felony charges, including possession of stolen property and drug charges.  Two women were also arrested for similar charges.

Catalytic Converter Thefts:

Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, a catalytic converter was stolen from a Nissan Frontier pickup at a park and ride lot on Taylor Road. Another one was taken from a Toyota pickup at the same lot during the day on Jan. 9.

Overnight on Jan. 8 or early morning on Jan. 9, someone stole catalytic converters from Toyota pickups and SUVs parked in the following locations:1800 block of Hillmont Way
2000 block of North Cirby Way
2200 block of Lee Way
1200 block of McKinley Drive
1900 block of McLaren Drive
1800 block of Sheffield Way

Tip from Roseville Police: Catalytic converters are expensive emission control devices mounted underneath vehicles.  Thieves crawl under the cars, unbolt or saw off the devices and then sell them to metal recyclers, who mine them for small amounts of precious metals.  Thieves most often steal from Toyota pickups and SUVs, but they also steal from other types of vehicles.  The safest place to park your vehicle at night is inside your locked garage.  If you see suspicious activity, including people looking under or crawling under cars, call police immediately.

Sierra Gardens Elementary Vandalism

Sometime overnight Jan. 4/5, someone vandalized a play structure at Sierra Gardens Elementary School.

Domestic Violence Arrest 

At 6 p.m. on Jan. 6, officers responded to calls of a man assaulting a woman in a commercial parking lot in the 1800 block of Douglas Boulevard. The male suspect fled before officers arrived, taking the woman's purse.  Roseville officers contacted the 39-year-old male suspect at his apartment in Sacramento and arrested him on suspicion of robbery, false imprisonment and domestic violence assault.

Mail Theft

Sometime Jan. 2 or 3, someone stole outgoing mail (a rental movie) from an unlocked residential mailbox in the 500 block of Arlene Drive. Roseville Police warn it's safest not to leave checks and other valuable items in mailboxes overnight or for long periods of time.  Put them in the box shortly before the mail carrier arrives, or use one of the secure mailboxes at the post office. If you're going out of town, have the post office hold your mail until you return.

Vehicle-Related Crime:

Between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 2, someone stole a red 2006 Honda dirt bike from a fenced enclosure in the 800 block of Vernon Street.

On Jan. 2 or 3, someone stole a red 1986 Toyota SR5 pickup from the 1400 block of Kingswood Drive.

Overnight Jan. 2/3, someone rummaged through an unlocked car parked in a driveway in the 1300 block of Whitstable Drive, and took loose change.

Between 10:20 and 10:40 a.m. on Jan. 3, someone broke the window of a car in a fitness center parking lot in the 300 block of North Sunrise, reached in and took a purse containing the victim's wallet, ID, credit cards, gift cards, a cell phone and a camera.

Between 5 p.m. Jan. 3 and 11 a.m. Jan. 4, someone stole the tailgate and a welder from a pickup parked in the 2000 block of Beatty Way, and scratched the paint on the pickup.

Between 3:30 and 5:10 p.m. on Jan. 4, a VW Beetle was stolen from the 4000 block of Woodcreek Oaks Blvd.  The car was located near Watt Avenue and Roseville Road late the same night, undamaged and unoccupied.

Between 5 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 6, someone broke the window of a car parked in a roller skating rink parking lot in the 800 block of Riverside Avenue, and took a purse that had been left on the center console, containing the victim's ID, credit cards, and cash.  The burglar also took tools and a portable GPS unit.

Between 8:15 and 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 6, someone broke into a car in the 1700 block of Windrush Lane, and took a suitcase containing expensive camera equipment.

Between 5:20 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. on Jan. 6, someone smashed the window of a vehicle parked in a restaurant parking lot in the 2000 block of Taylor Road, and stole a laptop computer.  The victim had put the laptop bag on the floorboard behind the driver's seat.

Sometime overnight Jan. 6/7, someone pulled out the driver's window of a car parked in the 1000 block of Madden Lane, and tried to pull out the in-dash stereo. The thief damaged the car but didn't take anything.

Sometime before Jan. 9, someone stripped parts from a vehicle in an auto sales lot in the 600 block of Riverside Avenue. 

Commercial Burglaries:

Between 6 p.m. Jan. 5 and 8 a.m. Jan. 6, someone shattered the front window of an optometrist's office in the 1800 block of Douglas Boulevard and took numerous designer sunglasses.

Between 10 p.m. Jan. 5 and 9 a.m. Jan. 6, someone smashed the front door of a store in the 300 block of North Sunrise Avenue and tried, unsuccessfully, to pry open the safe.  Nothing appeared to have been taken.

Thursday, Dec. 29

Between Dec. 29 and Jan. 3, someone entered an apartment in the 200 block of Harding Boulevard, possibly through an open window, and took a TV and a wallet.

Tuesday, Jan. 3

Between 6 p.m. Jan. 3 and 3 p.m. Jan. 4, someone broke into a house on Verbena Court, possibly through a back door, and took guitars and a saxophone.  Other property from the house was stacked up in the back yard along the fence, as if the burglar had gotten scared off and left the property behind. There are no suspects at this time.

Thursday, Jan. 5

Between 10 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 5, someone pried open a door and burglarized a house in the 700 block of Darling Way, taking laptop computers and jewelry.

Saturday, Jan. 7

Sometime over the past weekend (Jan. 7/8), someone broke into an apartment at 1148 Conroy Lane, taking a wallet, cigarettes and other small items.
