Granite Bay's Haley Anderson Earns Silver in 10K Open Water Swim

An enthusiastic group of family and friends watched and cheered as Granite Bay native Olympic swimmer Haley Anderson competed in the 10K open swim marathon event yesterday, Aug. 9, at the London 2012 Olympic games.

While many of Anderson’s relatives were in the stands of Hyde Park for the excitement, she had support back home, with her aunt, grandmother and Kaiser Permanente staff watching a live stream on the Internet in a conference room at the Roseville Medical Center on Eureka Road.

Kathi Conry, RN, at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, is one of Anderson’s aunts. The race was projected from a laptop onto a big screen.

"Oh my gosh! This is the best way to watch the Olympics. What an amazing finish. I can't believe how exciting it was. Haley swam so well. She is such a great athlete," said Conry.

The open swim event took place at 4 a.m. PDT. But the wake-up was well worth it as her family watched her win the silver medal with a time of 1:57:38.6.

Her grandmother Jean Conry, who watched the race live yesterday morning said, "I'm so happy the race is over, she fought hard for it and earned it. She deserves it. She has worked so hard for this."

Haley is a graduate of Granite Bay High School and is headed into her senior year at University of Southern California where she is on the swim team.

Her connection to Kaiser Permanente is strong. The 20-year-old was born at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara and her aunts, mother and cousin work for .

Last week, the group watched Alyssa Anderson, Haley's sister, help Team USA swim its way to a gold medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 4x200M relay event.

This was one of several viewing parties Kaiser has hosted, allowing physicians, staff and Anderson’s relatives to support her from home.

"I've worked with Dr. Jeanne Conry (Anderson’s aunt) since coming to Kaiser, so I wanted to come out and support her and her family. I love the Olympics and seeing our country participate in something healthy,” said Mary Lou Jones, PhD., RN, who works at Kaiser Permanente Roseville. “The Olympics align with KP's mission. I don't know Haley, but I feel a connection to her. This is the first time I've known of someone to root for!"
