Where in Roseville Will You Celebrate National Doughnut Day 2013?
The first Friday in June is National Doughnut Day and we want you well prepared with some doughnut trivia and a reader's guide of sorts to local doughnut shops.

When you get a doughnut do you go for the glazed or the fruit filled? Do you like maple bars and buttermilk bars or do you prefer the plain or chocolate old fashioned doughnut? It's National Doughnut Day so indulge a little.
National Doughnut Day was started by the Salvation Army back in 1938 and was meant as a vehicle to honor the women who served doughnuts and coffee to soldiers during World War I.

Is a maple bar or a fritter actually a doughnut? According to the doughnut style guide (yes there is a doughnut style guide) at the Serious Eats website, “a doughnut is a deep-fried piece of enriched dough, traditionally (but not always) sweet and traditionally (but not always) ring-shaped. Once fried, that dough is often then finished with sugar, frosting, or glaze; or filled with cream, jelly, or another sweet element.”
Spelling

We also learn from the style guide that the variant spelling “donut” was started by the Doughnut Machine Corporation, which thought international sales would be helped by a phonetic spelling.
