📰 News we're reading

1. ‘We did lose everything': Sacramento Fire Department surprises family that lost home and Christmas presents in fire (fox40.com) — A Sacramento family who lost their home and Christmas presents in a Dec. 9 house fire is getting heartfelt support from Sacramento Fire Station 30, whose crew rescued their 5-year-old son and then bought gifts with their own money. While the family is still displaced and raising funds to rebuild, they say the community’s generosity is helping their children feel the holiday spirit despite losing everything.

2. Sacramento Region Community Foundation Offers 40+ Scholarships for Students (sacramentopress.com) — Students in the Sacramento region can now apply for more than 40 locally funded scholarships worth up to $10,000 each, with most applications due by March 13, 2026. Awards target a wide range of needs and interests, from former foster youth to future vets, and are managed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.

3. California opens door to more Delta pumping after federal rollback (eenews.net) — State officials in Sacramento have approved looser environmental rules that could let water managers pump more from the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, potentially affecting supplies for cities and farms statewide. The Department of Fish and Wildlife added safeguards, requiring case‑by‑case approval based on real‑time impacts to endangered fish before pumping can exceed current limits.

4. Environmental groups sue Sacramento County over Coyote Creek solar project (sacbee.com) — Sacramento County is being sued by environmental and conservation groups over the Coyote Creek Agrivoltaic Ranch Project, a large solar development in the county’s southeastern oak woodlands. Opponents say the project near Rancho Murieta and Prairie City SVRA would remove thousands of oaks and damage historic Barton Ranch, while the county maintains most impacts are mitigated under its environmental review.

5. Internet slow? Map reveals which provider is fastest at every US address (kxan.com) — If you’re frustrated with slow internet in Sacramento, the FCC’s newly updated national broadband map can show which providers offer the fastest speeds at your exact address, just like it does for the Governor’s Mansion. By entering your home location, you can compare technologies, advertised upload and download speeds, and see whether you’re getting anything close to modern “high‑speed” service.
