East Sacramento restaurant shuts down for repairs after Christmas Day vandalism (sacbee.com) — East Sacramento’s Brickland Restaurant & Bar on Folsom Boulevard is closed until further notice after a Christmas Day break‑in and vandalism caused significant damage, prompting a suspicious-fire investigation by Sacramento Fire. The Afghan-American fusion spot and its adjacent Brick Cafe are both shut during repairs, while neighbors and customers rally online with messages of support for the Amiri family owners.
   

2. Beer for a Butterfly Contest begins Jan. 1 (davisenterprise.com) — Sacramento-area residents can join UC Davis’ quirky “Beer for a Butterfly” contest starting Jan. 1, racing to spot the year’s first live cabbage white butterfly in Sacramento, Yolo, or Solano counties. The winner, verified by video and location details emailed to the Bohart Museum, earns a pitcher of beer while contributing to long-term climate and butterfly research.
   

3. Man sentenced to over 470 years to prison for sexually assaulting 2 girls (fox40.com) — A Sacramento County man has been sentenced to 475 years to life in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting two young girls, with crimes beginning when they were as young as 4. Prosecutors say a jury convicted him of multiple child sex charges and found several aggravating factors, though under California’s elder parole rules he could still be eligible for a parole hearing in about 18 years.
   

4. CA takes advantage of winter season rain for future dry months, droughts (fox40.com) — State officials are partnering with 14 local agencies in the Sacramento and San Joaquin regions to capture winter stormwater, reduce flood risk, and bank more water underground for future dry months. Governor Gavin Newsom says new pumps, land clearing, and recharge projects aim to turn heavy rains into long-term supplies for communities, farms, and ecosystems across California.
