SAN DIEGO, CA — One woman was killed and two residents were displaced after a fire burned through the roof of a San Diego home, authorities said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 2:35 a.m. Monday at a one-story, single-family home in the 10800 block of Westonhill Drive, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Fire officials said that the fire was knocked down within about 15 minutes, and it was completely extinguished after about another 30 minutes.

"Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and started their first search of the residence," said Mónica Muñoz, media services manager for the department. "Two residents exited on their own before the first engine company arrived. During the second search, a woman was found deceased in the back of the home."

The blaze caused at least $700,000 in structure and property damage, Muñoz said. The fire, which burned through the roof of the house, was contained mostly to the room of origin with some minor spread into the hallway.

"The residents reported being alerted to the fire because they smelled smoke," Muñoz said. "However, there is no indication that any functioning smoke detectors were inside this residence."
