Here are three of the top stories in San Diego today:
- We are all sick of it — the shots, the masks, the quarantine. Yet, COVID-19🦠has infected 1,886 people in 3 days. The cumulative coronavirus total is now at 906,755, with 5,453 deaths. This information comes from San Diego County’s Health and Human Services Agency. Protect yourself — get fully vaccinated and boosted. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - It will be a boon to the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It will speed the flow of traffic. The new port of entry, Otay II, will help both cars🚗and trucks🚛to move through the area. “This project is also good for the environment,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “When you have these many cars idling for hours and hours at a time here at San Ysidro and Otay (two other crossings in area) that means emissions get into our atmosphere and it hurts our quality of life.” The new port of entry will have moveable lanes. The new crossing will also have a toll system, with revenues shared between both the U.S. and Mexico. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (FOX 5 San Diego)
- Have you seen them? Those weird, egg-like things growing on trees🌳🌳around El Cajon are Reishi mushrooms. They are parasites that eat the trees and will eventually kill them, but it may take as long as a decade. So, what is a homeowner to do? According to Pat Nolan, a plant pathologist, nothing. “I would just let it be. I would keep an eye out on it and let it grow because it can take years or decades before it can kill it,” Nolan said. Even if the homeowner removes the mushrooms, it will not end the problem. The fungus is already living in the tree. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (CBS News 8)

From my notebook:
- San Diego Humane Society: "Many San Diegans savor time spent with their canine🐶companions at Fiesta Island Dog Park, strolling through the sand, playing with other pups and exercising by the beautiful bay front. When the ability to use the area as an off-leash haven for dog lovers was at risk, Jean Spengel, a long-time local veterinarian and animal lover, founded the nonprofit FIDO - Fiesta Island Dog Owners. After 15 years of work, her organization was able to permanently protect the beloved 90-acre park for humans and pets to enjoy!" (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- The Arc of San Diego: "Vote for your favorite door! Clients and staff from Sulpizio, East County, Gerber and North County have been hard at work decorating their doors (or walls, in some cases 😊) with under-the-sea themes. Vote in the poll below by Friday, Aug. 26, to select the winning design!" (The Arc of San Diego via Facebook)
- San Diego Botanic Garden: "Engage your senses through connection with the natural world as you listen to the music of plants paired with sound healing🎻instruments, consume 😋digestible preparations of the plants, and learn about their medicinal🌿benefits through storytelling and from a felt experience in your body." (San Diego Botanic Garden via Facebook)
- San Diego County Library: 📚"The winners of the 2022 One Book One San Diego are now out, and we couldn’t be more excited! 'The Vanishing Half,' (2020) written by Brit Bennett. Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing." (San Diego County Library via Facebook)
- Downtown San Diego Partnership: "Did you know an average tree🌳needs 10 gallons of water🚰a month to survive? In addition to making sure Downtown's trees are watered on a regular basis, our Clean & Safe team provides additional services like tree trimming, stake installation and removal, and more to ensure our urban canopy thrives. If you see any trees in your neighborhood that need this kind of attention, contact info@improvedtsd.org." (Downtown San Diego Partnership via Facebook)
