Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:

  1. We were doing so well. Who knew it would turn out like this? Yet, gas prices in San Diego have risen 21 times in the last 22 days according to AAA. "Oil Price Information Service reports that several local refineries are undergoing unplanned maintenance as fuel inventories are at their lowest levels in a decade, which caused Los Angeles wholesale gas prices to rise sharply this week," said Doug Shupe, the Automobile Club of Southern California's corporate communications and programs manager. Meanwhile, the average gas price around the country set back on June 14 is $1.316 less than the record of $5.016. Guess we need to tighten our belts again. 2. You’ve heard the safety tips. If you are a walker, wear bright-colored clothes, carry a flashlight at night, always walk on the sidewalks, and look before you cross. If you are a driver, drive the speed limit, watch out for pedestrians, and stop at crosswalks. Despite the warnings we have all heard before, a greater number of pedestrians have been killed in San Diego. What can we do to reverse this trend? Drivers and walkers should stay sober. Drivers and walkers should make eye contact with each other. Drivers and walkers should not be on their cell phones. Pay attention. Hang up and drive! 3. It is one of the last affordable housing options in Imperial Beach. It is the Miramar Mobile Home and RV Park. However, problems remain. The park requires renters to move out every six months. Those who don’t, are evicted. Those who do move out face rent increases when they move back. According to park owners, this policy allows them to repair the sites. Mobile home parks are governed under state authority. However, the City of Imperial Beach would like to draft new protections for the renters living there. One idea was to institute a 3 percent rate cap and put a moratorium on evictions. Though this could trigger a lawsuit, some on the council believe it would be worth doing to protect the people living in the community. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. 4. Poor young thing! A horse named Shocker experienced the misfortune of getting stuck in his owner waterless pool. It happened out in Jamul. The owner tried to create a ramp to help Shocker out of the pool, but the effort was to no avail. The owner reached out to Department of Animal Services which sent out the San Diego Humane Society’s Emergency Response Team. The team set up a rescue tripod in order to lift the horse. They put a protective helmet on the horse to limit its vision and keep him calm. Three hours later, Shocker was safely out of the dry pool and into greener pastures.
