Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- As a result of the San Diego Regional Human Trafficking Task Force’s Operation Century Week, 30 people were arrested for human trafficking. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan stated, “We will not tolerate this modern-day slavery of vulnerable children and young adults being bought and sold like a piece of pizza.” The illegal selling of human beings generates $810 million a year. - A lawsuit alleges that the San Diego City Council violates First Amendment free-speech rights during City Council meetings' public comments. Bryan Pease, a civil rights attorney, asked the San Diego Superior Court to stop the council policy on comments. In addition, Cory Briggs, said to be a taxpayer advocate, has cited the state’s Brown Act regarding open meetings, and its mandate that members of the public have a chance to address legislative bodies directly. The City of San Diego has declined to comment. (Times of San Diego)
- We owe them big time. They are veterans and active-duty families without basic nutrition. The good news is that these families are welcome to Feeding San Diego food banks to access nutritious meals. “We partner with military nonprofits and schools that are actually on base, especially in the Camp Pendleton area, and we partner with them for programming that reaches these military families, especially those that are lower enlisted,” said Carissa Casares, Senior Communications Manager, Feeding SD. The nonprofit distributes food at its weekly pantry drives to anyone who is facing hunger in San Diego. (CBS News 8)
- Be on the lookout, they're coming our way! The eastern monarch butterflies are traveling to San Diego during their annual migration to the warmer climes of Mexico. These beautiful orange and black butterflies have been placed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's "red list" of threatened species. They are endangered due to drought, severe weather, and the loss of habitat. Want to help the monarchs survive? Plant milkweed in your garden so that they'll have a place to lay their eggs.
