Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- On Tuesday, a truck leaving Texas with 40 dogs aboard crashed and flipped on a highway in the early morning hours. Fortunately, firefighters, veterinarians and others were able to provide care on the scene. Although two of the dogs did not make it, 38 puppies reached the Helen Woodward Animal Center on Wednesday morning. Officials said 20 dogs will be up for adoption starting Saturday, Dec. 24. (Rancho Santa Fe Review)
- Chula Vista is building "pallet homes" for the homeless. Sixty-six units will be built on land near Broadway and Main Street. The shelter will hold 130 people in total. Restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities will be on site, since the individual units will not have bathrooms. Two multi-purpose rooms will be for community use. The federal government is funding the project. (CBS News 8)
- Don’t want to spend your time in the kitchen this Christmas? Why not feast on a Christmas dinner at a San Diego restaurant this year? For less than $50 per person, families can enjoy their holiday dinner at Farmers Table in Little Italy. Herb & Wood is offering a four-course meal on Christmas Eve for $92 per person, just $37 for kids. So, check out a local restaurant near you for specials and spend your time with your guests this year. (FOX 5 San Diego)
- Santa’s helpers at the USPS in San Diego are making sure that letters to Santa get up to the North Pole this year. Along with their holiday wish list, children often decorate their letters with colorful artwork to be sure and catch Santa’s eye. Santa received many requests this year for good health and happiness for family members. Be sure to track Santa on Christmas Eve on the Norad Santa Tracker website. (CBS News 8)
