Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- Batten down the hatches! Santa Ana wind gusts of 60 mph are expected to storm through the mountains and valleys of San Diego County. Northeast winds from 25 to 35 mph are expected in most areas. Winds may knock down trees and power lines. Monitor the latest forecasts for up-to-date information. (Patch)
- It’s time to begin shopping for your Thanksgiving dinner! Where can you shop to get the best bang for your buck? Well, you may need to shop a few different stores to keep costs down, but it may be worth your time and trouble. Read on for tips about prices of turkeys, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, butter and pumpkin pie. (CBS News 8)
- The City of San Diego voted to put some teeth into the city’s Street Vendor Ordinance. The newly strengthened ordinance would prohibit street vendors in city parks, beaches and sidewalks. According to the Mission Beach town council, the city needs to protect public access to the beach area so that citizens can enjoy nature. Others point out that shops in the affected areas pay for business licenses, while street vendors do not. Street vendors will need to find other ways of selling their wares to comply with the new ordinance. (NBC San Diego)
- The City of San Diego has an ambitious goal: The plan is to expand the tree canopy around the city, from 13 percent to 28 percent by 2035. Why is this important? There are concerns about skin cancer and heat stroke caused by lack of shade. Also, we need more trees to combat auto emissions in the air. If met, the goal would bring rewards to city residents, but the goal is not without its issues. Limited water resources and lack of green space must also be considered. (Voice of San Diego)
