  1. Demonstrators, pro and con, marched in San Diego regarding the possible repeal of a woman’s right to an abortion. California already has reproductive rights protections in place, but it may put an amendment to the State’s constitution on the November ballot. "At a time when there is a lot of focus on restricting abortion in many states, California wants to be a leader in saying 'Oh, actually, we think it's important to affirm that a woman should be able to have the right to choose an abortion and we want to change the narrative a bit,'” Robert Shapiro, University of San Diego Dean and C. Hugh Friedman Professor of Law, said. California residents could then vote on the issue in November. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (NBC San Diego)
  2. Interest rates are rising! Credit card interest rates, personal loan rates, and mortgage rates will soon rise. How will this affect us locally? According to Alan Gin, economics professor with the University of San Diego, the rise in interest rates should slow down the housing market in San Diego. “With the interest rates going up — that is going to cause payments to be higher —then it might price some people out of the market,” said Gin. “Reducing consumer spending, reducing investment by businesses — that would slow the economy down, and that would put less pressure then on prices.” This is expected to be the first of several rate changes planned by the Federal Reserve. 3. It has been a clean water issue for years. Now, the State of California is demanding that the Navy clean up the toxic ‘fiery marsh’ dump on North Island. The Navy has discharged 300,000 – 800,000 gallons of hazardous waste per year. Attempts to clean up the dump over the years have failed. The State is now asking the U.S. Navy to complete the cleanup, saying “the removal of the contaminated soils, remediation of the groundwater, and cessation of the unpermitted discharge must be addressed."
