Adopt A Pet For Free Saturday At San Diego Humane Society
San Diego Humane Society will waive adoption fees Saturday for all animals during the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society is celebrating the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day Saturday.
The nonprofit organization will waive adoption fees that day for all animals to give hundreds of pets a chance to find forever homes. San Diego Humane Society currently has 1,954 animals in its care, including 795 that are available for adoption, spokesperson Nina Thompson told Patch.

California Adopt-a-Pet Day is a statewide initiative hosted by CalAnimals, San Francisco SPCA and the ASPCA to reduce shelter overcrowding and raise awareness about pet adoption.

The 2024 event resulted in more than 2,300 adoptions across the state. San Diego Humane Society found homes for 164 animals in a single day.
"Waiving adoption fees for a day can change hundreds of lives — both for animals and the people who love them," said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. "We're excited to join shelters across California to shine a light on adoption and help more animals find the families they deserve."

In addition to waiving fees on Saturday, San Diego Humane Society recently expanded its weekend adoption hours, giving community members more opportunities to adopt pets throughout the busy summer season. Shelters in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego are now open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The extended hours will be in effect through Oct. 25.
All adoptions include current vaccinations, permanent microchip identification, spay/neuter, and a free veterinary exam at participating clinics.
