Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:
- San Diego Humane Society volunteers traveled to the hard-hit area of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, where gusting winds and damaging flood waters destroyed that strip of beachfront property. Their goal was to find and help rescue pets in the area. "As you can see, [we're] kind of going house to house right now, street to street, checking to see if anybody needs any pet supplies, dog food, cat food," said Lieutenant Clint Ganus with the San Diego Humane Society Search and Rescue Team. (CBS 8)
- The minimum wage in San Diego will rise from $15 to $16.30 per hour beginning January 1, 2023. This is great news for the workers already battling the effects of inflation. The cost of living in San Diego is high, and it’s difficult for many families to survive. While the increase will help workers, some wonder whether the increase will push prices even higher. (NBC San Diego)
- Millions come to visit the Oceanside area every year. So, in an effort to create a cleaner, safer Oceanside, beginning today, the City of Oceanside will have unarmed guards patrolling the downtown, the beachfront, and the civic center areas. The City Council voted to contract with Mainstreet Oceanside at the cost of $1.3 million. Four security guards will work 24/7 to protect the community for one year. If the plan is successful, it will be expanded to other neighborhoods. (NBC San Diego)
- Yes, it’s that time of year again: The scent of pumpkin spice has started to permeate the air at local cafes and eateries. It’s pumpkin season, and maybe you’ve been thinking about baking a pumpkin pie, bread or cake. Of course, you can buy pumpkins at your local store, but surely you want to find a fresh pumpkin for carving your jack-o’-lantern or making your home-baked goods . Find out more about where you can find a pumpkin patch near you, where you can pick your own pumpkin, and where you can learn how to carve your pumpkin using a step-by-step process. Check it out!
