SAN DIEGO, CA — An alleged Guatemalan drug trafficker who prosecutors say is responsible for transporting large quantities of cocaine into the United States has been extradited to San Diego to face federal drug charges.
Erick Alexander Granados Garcia, 46, was indicted by a grand jury in 2017 and apprehended two months later by Guatemalan authorities. He appeared in a San Diego federal courtroom on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said Granados Garcia's case is part of a broader investigation into drug trafficking organizations based out of Colombia, Ecuador and Guatemala, which have moved cocaine via aircraft and maritime vessels into San Diego and Los Angeles for eventual distribution across the United States.
