Water Closure Lifted After Sewage Spill In La Jolla Shores
The city of San Diego reported a 750-gallon sewage spill Wednesday morning in La Jolla Shores, according to the county.
SAN DIEGO, CA — A portion of La Jolla Shores that was closed following a sewage spill reopened Thursday, an official with the county of San Diego confirmed.
The city of San Diego reported a 750-gallon sewage spill at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in La Jolla Shores, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality.
The county's Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program conducted water sampling at the impacted location and closed access to the water 150 feet north and south of 8556 El Paseo Grande, the storm drain where the sewage entered the ocean, according to Donna Durckel, a spokesperson with the Department of Environmental Health and Quality.

"The cause appears to be a blockage in the city's sewer line, which caused sewage to spill out onto the street and into the storm drain which leads to the ocean," Durckel said.
The La Jolla Shores closure was lifted at 11 a.m. Thursday following additional sampling, Durckel said.

An advisory is now in place for 250 feet south to 500 feet north of Scripps Pier in La Jolla Shores because bacteria levels exceed health standards. Beachgoers are advised to avoid water contact in the advisory area.
