Here are four of the top stories in San Diego today:
- 📨San Diego County schools are warning parents about a new brightly colored synthetic drug known as rainbow fentanyl. The pills resemble the candy, Smarties, and could lead to overdoses in children and young adults. "It's definitely a concerning trend," said Dr. Willough Jenkins, a child psychiatrist at Rady Children's Hospital. She said, "The risks and the stakes are very, very high because it is life or death when we're talking about fentanyl." Dr. Jenkins suggested that parents talk to their children about drug use. Do it today! (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
- In a unanimous vote, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors supported two efforts to assist veterans by hiring more of them to work in government. A new resource center will be added in East County to help veterans located in that region. The county already has resource centers in the South, Central, North Inland, and North Coastal areas which will also participate. Supervisor Jim Desmond, a Navy veteran, said, "It is vital to ensure that those who bravely served our country have all the opportunities of employment with the county and I look forward to working alongside fellow veterans for the years to come." Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer will create a plan for implementation of the new initiative. (City News Service)
- It's back! That amazing bioluminescent red tide has returned to San Diego shores.✨ While some consider it an unbearable stench, others consider it a natural wonder. Vishwas Lokesh, photographer and self-described bioluminescence chaser, commented, "It feels like you are on another planet altogether, it’s unreal. It’s mesmerizing but still very calming." Want to see it for yourself? Catch it now before it's gone. (NBC San Diego)
- Tomorrow is a new month, and a new calendar of events is out to bring you the latest local events in and around America’s Finest City. You can visit the Art of Science exhibit at the UCSD Library, or you can pop over to the 20th annual Oktoberfest in Ocean Beach, or you can get spooked, costumed, cocktailed (it’s 21+) on The Nat’s rooftop, when the Secret Society of Adultologists returns with the hands-on science learning event, “Spooky!” These and many more events are in the calendar.
