Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- 🐤 The San Diego Humane Society confirmed that a black swan here has avian flu. Senior director for project wildlife, Dr. Jon Enyart, stated: “It's really important right now that we as a community come together and see this as a big deal.” He added: “Any species or group that is susceptible, we are concerned that we can lose numbers, and they’re all important to our ecosystem,” said Enyart. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that 47 million birds have died in the nation this year. If you raise chickens or other birds, you should be concerned. The risk to humans and other mammals remains low. (NBC San Diego)
- Last month, thousands of tenants received emails from the county alerting them that their rental assistance from the Emergency Rental Assistance program (ERA) would not be paid. Now, many are facing eviction. It seems that the ERA program accepted applications, not knowing whether or not funding would be available. A resident of Encinitas who received the notice said that he called the county for help: “I eventually ended up getting someone who basically just said, ‘I don’t know what to tell you,’” he recalled. “I (feel) paralyzed … I’m alone. It’s just me and my son against the world, and there’s nowhere for me to go.” (Times of San Diego)
- New arrivals at the border have spiked recently. Forty-five refugees who fled Venezuela are now being housed at three of the Alpha Project’s shelters in San Diego. Twenty asylum seekers are being sheltered at Father Joe’s Villages. However, the facilities cannot manage the overload of incoming persons needing help. “The reality is I do not know what to do,” Alpha Project CEO Bob McElroy said. “This is way outside our field of expertise. I’m looking for somebody to give us some clear direction on what we’re supposed to do here.” Jim Vargas, CEO of Father Joe’s Villages, said he was also looking to the city, and San Diego Housing Commission, for guidance. - You've been invited to a Thanksgiving dinner. You know that you can’t show up empty handed! What are you going to do? The good news is that now you can order Mama’s Kitchen Thanksgiving Pies online. Proceeds will provide nutritional support to 12 San Diego residents at risk of malnutrition due to cancer, HIV, congestive heart failure, Type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. It’s a great way to contribute to a local nonprofit, while gifting a wonderful pie to family and friends. Pie flavors include pumpkin, traditional apple, pecan, and Dutch apple, and are available for $32 each. Learn more at www.mamaskitchen.org (Times of San Diego)
