Here are three of the top stories in San Diego today:
- Will the outdoor ‘streetaries’ around the City of San Diego pay the new fee to keep outdoor dining places open? Businesses are experiencing sticker shock at the cost. “Between $25,000 to $30,000 a year. It’s now like an additional rent we will have to pay to the City of San Diego,” said Sara Arjmand of Allegro. “How bout cutting those and make it like $5 a square foot for each year for the first, then after that make it $10, then make $15, then make it $20 so the businesses have a chance to recuperate,” said David Rodger of Filippi’s Pizza Grotto. - The Zoo Wildlife Alliance has done research with the Toledo Zoo to show that populations isolated from threats could help preserve these animals from extinction. "This program demonstrates the role and value of zoos in buying time for a species until the primary threats are addressed, and wild populations can be restored," according to James Biggs, director of conservation and population management for the Zoo and Aquarium Association. These isolated animals, called insurance populations, have saved animal species such as the endangered Tasmanian Devil. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - If you are an early riser, you may be able to view an alignment of five planets and the moon. Appearing east to south in an arc, the alignment will be visible at 5 a.m. on Friday morning. You can see Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, along with the crescent moon. To the naked eye planets will appear as bright stars. According to National Geographic, "Having two or three planets huddled together is not all that rare, but the last time we saw a conjunction the five brightest planets was in December 2004."
