Brookfield Bids Again To Redevelop Sports Arena And Midway District

A team led by Brookfield Properties announced it will bid again to redevelop the Sports Arena and surrounding 48-acre area in the dilapidated Midway district.

“Our team is fully committed to creating a bright future for the Sports Arena site and understands the unique needs of the Midway community and San Diego,” said Jessica Jones, senior director at Brookfield.

“We are taking this opportunity to create an enhanced and more robust mixed-use destination that builds on our existing experience collaborating with the city, input gathered from the community and our hands-on partnership,” she said in the announcement on Tuesday.

The Brookfield team includes sports management firm ASM Global and affordable housing developers Affirmed Housing and National CORE.

Former Mayor Kevin Faulconer selected Brookfield in August 2020, to redevelop the area, but the city was notified in June that the bidding process had likely violated the 2019 Surplus Land Act.

Brookfield said the Discover Midway project will take a fresh, community-crafted approach to redeveloping the rundown area with affordable housing, entertainment venues, offices, parks and a new arena.

“The Sports Arena site is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to add to the fabric of what makes San Diego a special place for all,” said Jimmy Silverwood, executive vice president at Affirmed Housing.
