Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- The California Transportation Commission has allocated more than $150 million for infrastructure projects in San Diego and Imperial Counties. “This allocation – which includes a significant federal investment — allows Caltrans and our local partners to continue building the equitable, sustainable and safe transportation system on which future generations will depend,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. Read on for information about locations that will be upgraded. (Times of San Diego)
- A massive project will provide Internet service to underserved communities in San Diego. "It's essentially this large pipeline, so then infrastructure providers like COX can connect that pipeline to the last mile, which is our residents and businesses, so being able to close that funding will also help close that digital divide," said Chanelle Hawkins, who is with COX cable. Construction began last week near Poway. Currently 200K San Diego homes are without Internet service. (CBS News 8)
- Learn the history, meaning and symbolism of DĂa de los Muertos. Visit the many DĂa de los Muertos altars now available for viewing in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. The holiday is observed on November 1 and 2. You can sign up for the daily hour-long altar tour in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park at 3 p.m. Attendance is limited. Sign up at the counter inside the Robinson-Rose Visitor Information Center. (Cool San Diego Sights!)
- Got gently used/extra new Halloween costumes? If so, it's time to clean out that closet. Coronado Girl Scout Troop 6561 will be happy to take those costumes off your hands. The troop will donate the costumes to the Monarch School for underprivileged children in San Diego. Donation bins will be set up in several schools around Coronado. The costume donation drive, which began on October 14, will end Monday, November 7. Questions? Contact: nadohalloweencostumedrive@gmail.com. (Coronado Times Newspaper)
