- Both the City and the County of San Diego are awash in State of California funds. The City received $68.5 million. The money will be spent on 19 projects distributed among the nine council districts. The surrounding areas of San Diego will receive half a billion dollars in state funding. The largest allocation will go to the LOSSAN Rail Corridor which connects San Diego with cities up the coast. The projects chosen will improve everyday life for people countywide. - Cities in California are already required to compost organic material, but San Diego is late to the party. CalRecycle is being patient with municipalities that fall short of the goal instituted under SB 1383. However, there are penalties, including fines that could be levied. According to Renee Robertson, the head of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department, the city will achieve its climate goal. In fact, Robertson said, "the plan is to turn the waste into mulch to cover gardens and lawns, plus a thick dark mixture of organic material that can bring life to the region’s sandy or clay soils." Once green waste pickups become weekly, the Miramar Greenery will manage 2.5 times the amount of compostable material than it does now. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. - Residents of the area want to rename Morrison Street after a local icon, Dr. Willie Morrow. He was the inventor of the Afro Pick and the California Curl, later known as the Jheri Curl. Residents would like to honor Dr. Morrow by renaming a local street after the San Diego native. Renaming a street is not an easy process. Both the city and residents on the street would need to approve the measure to change the name to Willie Morrow Way. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (CBS News 8)
- Back-to-school time is often considered ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ by parents. However, it is also vaccination time for many kids going back to school. According to Dr. Kelly Motadel, M.D., M.P.H, county child health officer, "Doctor visits are essential to make sure our children are on track with growth and developmental milestones and with routine vaccinations. These shots can protect our kids from more than a dozen diseases." For more information about vaccines and where you can get them, check out the County website, or by calling 211.
