Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- After a month of ballot-counting, the San Diego County Registrar of Voters has certified the results of the Nov. 8, 2022, election. Voter participation was 54.2% with 1,043,490 ballots cast. Almost 90% of total votes were cast through mail-in ballots. Check out the official report for more information. (City News Service)
- A police sting by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force resulted in the arrest of five individuals this week on charges of alleged pimping and pandering, among other offenses. The sting was part of Operation Home for the Holidays over three days in San Diego, National City, and Santee. Human trafficking is prevalent in the hospitality, domestic work, commercial sex and construction industries. California has more cases of human trafficking reports than any other state, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. (Times of San Diego)
- It’s a shocking statistic. According to MANA de San Diego, a Latina woman earns 57 cents for every dollar earned by a white man in the same job. Based on the current rate of progress, Latinas will not reach equal pay with non-Latino men for another 200 years. Pay disparity can amount to more than a million dollars over the course of a career, according to MANA. Latinas comprise 21% of the labor force in the U.S., and their paychecks fall far below their male counterparts. (KPBS)
