CHP Cracking Down On DUI Drivers, Speeders Through July 4 Weekend In San Diego County

SAN DIEGO, CA — The California Highway Patrol will ramp up patrols across San Diego County and the Golden State starting Thursday as part of the agency's annual Fourth of July weekend crackdown on distracted, drunken and drug-impaired driving.

To help keep the roadways safe this Independence Day weekend, CHP officers will be out in full force during the statewide maximum enforcement period from 6:01 p.m. Thursday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

"Reckless driving and speeding have deadly consequences," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said. "It's every driver's responsibility to make safe choices behind the wheel. Let's work together to prevent tragedies by always designating a sober driver and keeping our roads safe for everyone."

A 24-hour enforcement effort by the CHP in early June resulted in nearly 18,000 citations, including more than 12,100 speeding citations.

Officers also made nearly 400 arrests for driving under the influence, according to the CHP. Eleven people died in crashes during that same period.
