- What is needed to prevent and end homelessness in San Diego? According to the Regional Task Force On Homelessness, more than 9,000 units and hundreds of new shelter beds are currently needed. "We know what the solutions are," RTFH CEO Tamera Kohler said. "We also know the distance we have to overcome but if we take the steps outlined in this plan homelessness will become a brief occurrence for individuals and families and not a permanent state of existence." The task force plans to end veteran, youth, family and senior homelessness over the next five years. It also plans to cut the total unsheltered population by half. (Patch)
- San Diegans are so proud! Craft Brewers here won 15 medals at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The festival draws 9,904 entries in 98 categories. Three local breweries took home gold medals, eight other local breweries received silver medals, four others took home bronze medals. Often called the capital of craft, San Diego has more craft breweries than any county in the U.S. (There San Diego)
- It took 30 years, but soil and groundwater that had been contaminated by petroleum has been cleaned up. “Cleaning up the contamination of the Mission Valley Aquifer is a remarkable achievement,” said Rob Hutsel, president of the San Diego River Park Foundation. “We applaud all parties that worked for so many years to rid the San Diego River and the community of this pollution.” (Times of San Diego)
- It's called the SDFD Mustache Madness, and it’s happening on Oct. 20. This fun event is a fundraiser to support FirefighterAid, a group that assists firefighters and their families in times of need. Show your support for the San Diego Fire Department and join in the fun, including the mustache competition, the silent auction, live music and entertainment, a raffle, and drink specials. All are welcome! (San Diego Reader)
