- Both the City and the County of San Diego have come together to increase the supply of affordable housing. “In most cases, the cities have their responsibilities, and the county has its responsibilities. But when we look at the affordable housing situation in our region, it is time for us to start thinking about these problems together, in a way that makes the most efficient use of our resources,” said Chair Nathan Fletcher. The collaboration, already in progress, will create 1,000 units on county land, as well as 2,000 on MTS-owned property. City and county officials will meet on Monday to vote on the plans. - Between Feb. 16 - Aug. 16, 2022, passengers may have been exposed to tuberculosis while riding on the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS). Riders using the Trolley Blue Line and the Trolley Orange Line may have been infected. “Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. “Most people who become infected after exposure to tuberculosis do not get sick right away. Some who become infected with tuberculosis will become ill at some point in the future, sometimes even years later. Blood tests and skin tests are effective to determine whether someone has contracted TB.” Officials are working to notify individuals who might have been exposed to the disease. (NBC San Diego)
- No-fault eviction protections are scheduled to end, effective today in San Diego. However, community activists are fighting to stop the clock before the protections end. "Hearing that predatory owners are circling tenants like sharks in certain communities wanting to evict them just so they can jack up the rent, and potentially force these folks into homelessness or to have to leave the San Diego region: that is all the evidence that anyone should need as to why tenant protections need to be strengthened," City Council President Elo-Rivera said. Elo-Rivera is working with the City Attorney’s office to draft a new proposal to update the tenant protection ordinance. (CBS News 8)
- Sadly, pets and livestock are sometimes caught in storms. Their owners are often consumed with getting family members to safety but cannot take the pets along with them. That’s where the San Diego Emergency Response Team steps in to help. The team goes out to rescue pets so they may be reunited with their owners. The team is now on their way to South Carolina, where Hurricane Ian has inflicted damages. The team will rescue pets who were left behind. They say that this is incredibly difficult work, but so very rewarding. (NBC San Diego)
