Crews Near Full Containment Of Border 2 Fire In San Diego County

An evacuation order remained in effect Wednesday for Otay Mountain-area neighborhoods.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Firefighters have nearly reached full containment of a wildfire that burned thousands of acres and forced evacuation orders and warnings north of the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County.

The blaze, called the Border 2 Fire, sparked around 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in a remote area near Otay Mountain Truck Trail, west of Doghouse Junction in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area, according to Cal Fire San Diego. As of 8:42 a.m. Wednesday, the fire remained at 6,625 acres and was 90% contained.

"With high humidity overnight and rain showers this morning, crews continue to anticipate no fire spread," Cal Fire said in a Wednesday morning update. "Ground crews will focus on suppression repair, mop up and patrolling existing fire lines."

All evacuation warnings were lifted on Sunday due to improved containment. Evacuation orders were reduced Monday.

An evacuation order remained in effect Wednesday for Otay Mountain-area neighborhoods, as crews worked to contain the smoldering remnants of the fire.

The fire caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
