SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — We've rounded up the stories you may have missed over the weekend to prepare you for the week ahead.

But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should know a pair of winter storms is expected to bear down on California, according to the National Weather Service. The initial system will bring a chance of light rain to the region, while an atmospheric river will later develop off Northern California and dip south into Southern California on Wednesday.

"Dry conditions with cooler than normal temperatures will continue into early this week," NWS Los Angeles forecasters wrote Monday. "A significant storm system will arrive Wednesday and last through Friday. It will bring rain, high elevation snow, and gusty winds to the region."

In other news, a new highly pathogenic strain of the bird flu has been discovered in California, raising alarm bells for agricultural and health officials in a state that has suffered the most outbreaks — human, bovine and avian — nationwide.
