SAN DIEGO, CA — A decomposed whale washed ashore Wednesday in San Diego.
Scientists from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were alerted early Wednesday to investigate the carcass of a 55-foot whale on La Jolla Shores.
"The whale at La Jolla Shores was very decomposed so it was impossible to determine the species," NOAA spokesperson Michael Milstein told Patch.

The team collected tissue samples to help determine the species. The whale was likely too large to be a gray whale, he noted.
"The whale had clearly been dead for some time and likely washed up on the beach overnight," Milstein said.
