Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. San Diegans need clean air. The county ranks 10th in areas with the most ozone pollution. How can we stop the pollution and clean up the environment? According to the American Lung Association, electrifying all freight hauling trucks by 2050 could reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the county. “We found 735 billion dollars in public health benefits is on the table if we make strong investments in cleaning up the truck sector, partnering that with clean energy, and really making a strong push to zero emission technology,” said Will Barrett, the Lung Association’s national director for clean air. The state has pledged to end the sale of internal combustion engines by 2035. (KPBS)
  2. It’s time to vote! It is your right, and your voice needs to be heard. “Every time you have the opportunity to go to the ballot, it matters,” said Shane Harris, a local civil rights activist. Ballots have gone out in San Diego County. You can vote by mail, or you can vote in person at your local polling place. The deadline to vote is Oct. 24. Not registered? You can register in person, online, or by mail. (FOX 5 San Diego)
  3. Looking for a new job? Consider working for Caltrans. Right now, dozens of open positions are available, offering good money and benefits. Jobs for the state Department of Transportation include equipment operators, highway and landscape maintenance workers, and maintenance service assistants. An in-person hiring event will take place at 4050 Taylor Street at the District 11 headquarters today from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. (Times of San Diego)
  4. It’s called the Hunter’s Moon, and it can be seen this week in San Diego. Why is it named the Hunter’s Moon? According to the Farmer’s Almanac: "Animals are beginning to fatten up ahead of winter, and since the farmers had recently cleaned out their fields under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily see the deer and other animals that had come out to root through the remaining scraps (as well as the foxes and wolves that had come out to prey on them)." Look to the east to see this bright orange Hunter’s Moon, the last full moon before Daylight Saving Time ends. (NBC San Diego)
