- It's the start of the flu season, and the San Diego County Health Agency has recommended that we get both influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations now. “Vaccination remains the best way to prevent severe outcomes and death from COVID-19,” said Dr. Cameron Kaiser, county deputy public health officer. “We are especially encouraging those eligible to get the new bivalent booster, as it is specifically designed to protect individuals from the virus variants currently circulating in our community. These variants and their relatives are expected to be with us into the holidays.” The death rate for those who did not get the vaccines was five times higher than those who completed all the vaccinations and boosters. - It was a man’s world, but Magda Fernandez did not let that stop her. After 22 years with the police department, Fernandez was promoted to Police Chief of the San Diego Harbor Police Department. “It means the world to me,” said Fernandez. “I have a huge sense of accomplishment” “There were a lot of challenges being female but also being a Hispanic female,” said Fernandez. “You compete a lot with the men, and it felt at the time, I know times have changed, but that you had to work harder, you had to prove yourself more.” Fernandez wants to change the perception of law enforcement in the Latino community. “It’s getting out there and letting the community know, ‘Hey we’re out here for you, and it’s not because you did something wrong,” said Fernandez. She hopes to inspire the next generation of Latino police officers. (Digital California News)
