Grid Operator Preparing For Another Evening Of Peak Energy Demand

The California Independent System Operator issued another Energy Emergency Alert Wednesday afternoon and urged residents to conserve electricity amid the continuing heatwave.

The “level 2” alert requests “emergency energy from all resources” to avoid rotating power outages.

It’s the ninth day in a row that California residents have been asked to conserve power during the late afternoon and early evening.
The Cal-ISO briefly went to a level 3 alert around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, and sent a cellphone warning to all residents, but conservation efforts avoided rotating blackouts.
“The state and much of the West is enduring an historically long and record-breaking heat wave, straining the grid from high electricity use,” the Cal ISO said in announcing a new alert.
