Here are the top stories in San Diego today:
- San Diego is said to be ground zero for fentanyl due to its location near the border. Fentanyl overdoses are way up over last year, affecting mostly those 18 - 45 years of age. First responders and recovery specialists remain on high alert. Although border officials have made a record number of seizures, the crisis continues. It is a tragedy for parents and loved ones. (CBS News 8)
- Several San Diego hospitals have begun setting up tents outside emergency rooms to handle the overflow of influenza cases, as well as COVID-19 cases. Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, Scripps Health’s chief medical officer of acute care operations explained, “The fear is that everything is just sort of bouncing off everything else, and once you’ve been through the flu, you could still get hit by COVID, or whatever other virus you’re going to get.” Avoid getting sick — Schedule your COVID and flu shots today. (KTLA Los Angeles)
- There are budget troubles ahead for the City of San Diego. Over the next five years, the city will face a deficit of $360 million. Pension costs will rise, and reserves will need to be shored up to needed levels. Inflation may also push up expenses. Meanwhile, the city’s annual revenue will increase to more than $2 billion. However, that will not be enough to avoid the trouble ahead. To find out more, read on. (La Jolla Light)
- The San Diego County Public Defender’s Office named 25 students the most remarkable teens in San Diego. Selected from 155 nominees, these teens, aged 13 – 19, received the award for acting as leaders, innovators, activists, and trailblazers. The winners are talented, they are driven to succeed, they have overcome adversity, and they have a passion for civic issues. These students represent the very best of San Diego.
