- Beware! Smugglers along the Mexican border are bringing in pesticides that are dangerous to honeybees and humans. These concentrated amitraz pesticides, Bovitraz and Taktic, are "a major threat to honeybee health,” according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In humans, the chemical can cause neurological effects, and reproductive effects, from eating contaminated honey. To learn more: Click into parenthesis, then click the link. (Times of San Diego)
- Police have solved serious crimes using Smart streetlight technology. Now, a new ordinance may hamper that work. The ordinance requires disclosure of who is being surveilled and why camera footage is being used. “You’ve put me in a position, you’ve put my task force officers in a position where… if we do something over here, we’re in violation of the privacy ordinance, and if we do something over here, we’re in violation of federal law. - The City of San Diego wants to be done with the 101 Ash St. lawsuits. Mayor Todd Gloria wants to settle with a $132 million buyout of the city’s leases, while City Attorney Mara Elliott has urged the City Council not to approve the settlement. Find out more. - Welcome to the Ocean Beach (OB) Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off being held this weekend. The event is free and will have music, art, beer garden, OB Dirty Birds Wing Eating Contest, Kids Fun Zone, and more! The Chili Competition is an amateur event, and entrants will be competing for the titles: Hottest Chili, Judges' Award, and Grand Prize: People's Choice Award. Entry to the Fair is always free. - San Diego Police Department: Did you know that it is illegal to participate as a driver in an intersection takeover event? SDPD seized 34 vehicles recently that participated in such events, and they plan to seize 24 more. (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)
- San Diego Humane Society: His name is Meatball, and he was seen last week running through the gorilla habitat San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Now, Meatball will return to his family, where he will not encounter any more gorillas. (San Diego Humane Society via Facebook)
- City of San Diego: For the last 50 years, the City’s Therapeutic Recreation Services program has provided therapeutic recreation programs for persons ages three and older who have disabilities.
