Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:
- The San Diego Unified School District has been presented with the America’s Healthiest Schools award. Eighteen of its schools received the award for their dedication to supporting the health and well-being of students, staff, and families. “As a district, we are committed to supporting the health and wellness of our school communities,” Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson said. “These awards are a testament to the great work our schools do in this area, ensuring students’ needs are met so they can learn, grow, and thrive.” The award was presented by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. (Times of San Diego)
- There is a myth out there that homeless individuals can just go into a shelter. The truth is that only 37 percent of the homeless can get into a shelter in a typical week. The City of San Diego doesn’t have enough shelter beds, or shelter space, to accommodate all those who would like to get off the streets and into a shelter. The city is trying to increase the shelter space available by building new centers, but it will take some time before everyone can be sheltered. (Voice of San Diego)
- 🎶 It’s a sunny day 🎶 in the neighborhood 🎶 who you gonna call? 🎶 the SurfUp app!📱Think about it — you’re out and about, and you see a super surf at the beach. Oh, how you wish you'd brought your surfboard, but wait! There is another way. Yes, surfing in San Diego is easier now that a team at UCSD has created an app-based system to bring surfboard rentals to the beach. It’s called the SurfUp app, and it works much the same way many of the bike apps do. Using the SurfUp app, customers can rent a board for as long as they wish, before returning it to the surf rack. Just how popular is this new app? SurfUp has seen a 250 percent increase in rentals and sales year over year. (UC San Diego Today)
