  1. San Diego renters currently have no protection from evictions, but if the Homeless Prevention Act, SB 567 passes, that will change. The law would plug loopholes for no-fault evictions and would cap permissible rent increases as well. Tenants around San Diego are now fighting for "stronger statewide protections" under the law that would protect them from unscrupulous practices. (CBS News 8)
  2. Mother nature continues to wreak havoc in San Diego. Travelers and residents in the North County were uprooted by rains, fallen trees and sinkholes. Twelve mobile home owners needed to be evacuated due to a large sinkhole on the property, and they still cannot go back to their homes. In Del Mar, a large Torrey pine crashed onto a family’s home and ended up in their living room. A giant sinkhole opened up in Encinitas, and traffic has been rerouted ever since. Amazing what damage nature can do! (ABC10 News)
  3. In advance of the Padres' Opening Day, the City of San Diego is moving homeless encampments in the area of Petco Park. The city posted three-hour notices advising unhoused persons to clean up the area and move to another location. Unfortunately, shelter beds are in short supply and the number of homeless people in San Diego continues to grow. (NBC San Diego)
  4. Are you a fool fur love? On April Fool’s Day, County Animal Services will offer a $20 adoption special for any adult animal at the shelter. Whether you’d like a German Shepherd, a pot-bellied pig or a tuxedo cat, you can find the pet of your dreams and get that furbaby a home full of love. Check out some of the available pets on the Animal Services website.

They may need to go to a food pantry, but they might not want to be there. —Pat Metcalf, Daily Bread Marketplace." (Feeding San Diego via Facebook)
  • Five juveniles with access to a handgun: "#SoutheasternDivision patrol officers ran the license plate of a Kia and discovered that it had been reported stolen. Upon further investigation, they found five juveniles inside the car, all with access to a handgun. Our officers acted quickly and safely and took them all into custody. The juveniles were arrested for the stolen vehicle and the handgun." (San Diego Police Department via Facebook)

  • Growing fresh fruits and vegetables in Arava: "Last week, we had the privilege of hosting international guest and Director of Arava International Center for Agricultural Training (AICAT) Hanni Arnon as part of a special Science Seminar Series. Arava is the most arid region in Israel, receiving less than one inch of rainfall per year - yet this region produces more than 50% of Israel's fresh fruit and vegetables. This is thanks to farmers and researchers like Hanni who have developed innovative agricultural practices for growing nutritious crops in the harshest climates."
