Here are four of the top stories today in San Diego:

  1. Regional leaders and community partners, as well as the chair and vice chair of San Diego County Board of Supervisors, are continuing their efforts to end homelessness. Those involved hope that the board will approve a letter declaring homelessness a public health crisis. The declaration would be a collaborative effort to access county programs and create new incentives for communities that are working to improve housing. (CBS News 8)
  2. If you’re planning to ride the train between Orange and San Diego counties before the end of January, you will be disappointed to learn this news: The final completion date for the project is now estimated to be sometime in February 2023. The service outage affects as many as 5,000 residents who commute daily. Freight traffic is also affected. (Voice of OC)
  3. The "smart streetlights" were originally purposed to monitor traffic patterns. Installed during Kevin Faulconer’s term as mayor back in 2016, the lights were never used for that purpose. Instead, they were used for surveillance video to solve violent crimes. However, there was no transparency or accountability. Community members felt that the surveillance infringed on personal privacy. Now, efforts are being made to balance public safety and personal privacy. (CBS News 8)
  4. Caltrans announced several closures that may affect your travels. Affecting the Northbound I-15 and the SR-78, the closures will take place overnight. If traveling northbound, motorists will need to continue on I-15, exit El Norte Parkway, turn left to the southbound I-15 onramp, and connect to SR-78. Westbound motorists will need to continue on SR-78, exit Nordahl Road, turn left to the eastbound SR-78 onramp, and connect to northbound I-15. Read on for further details. (FOX 5 San Diego)
